13-10-2016
Autor: Dorota Dziatkiewicz, studentka WIBC

Between 29.08-28.09.2016 a Civil Safety Engineering Faculty student Dorota Dziatkiewicz did her internship as part of the Polish-American cooperation project INFIRENET. She was working at the Office of Emergency Management in Colorado Springs, located in the central-western United States, Colorado.

The main purpose of the programme were: get acquainted with the detailed operation of federal, state and local emergency management systems,  EOP (Emergency Management Plans), EOC (Emergency Operation Center), US National Incident Management System (NIMS), US Incident Command System (ICS) and, above all, to gain experience.

For the first two days (30.08-31.08) she participated in the federal conference on the cooperation of the private-public sector - The Sixth Annual Building Resilience through Public-Private Partnerships Conference, organized by many institutions (eg. North American Aerospace Command, US Northern Command- USNORTHCOM ), US Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency etc.).

The following days she spent on professional and business meetings, training courses (eg.  logistics management training during the incidents - ICS and AAR - After Action Review) observed the work of each sector: planning, financing, recovery, preparedness, taking a closer look at fire service and police activities.

ICS is a standardized on-scene incident management concept designed specifically to allow responders to adopt an integrated organizational structure according to the complexity and demands of any single incident or multiple incidents without being hindered by jurisdictional boundaries.

During her internship she also did several courses and was awarded certificates eg. ICS-100 -  Introduction to ICS; ICS-200 - ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents;
ICS-300: Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents and IS-700 - National Incident Management System.

In her free time she was hiking, climbing to Pikes Peak (4302 m), Red Rock, Cheyenne Mountain and walking the streets of Colorado Springs.

The time spent in the United States allowed her to get experience, observe differences between polish and American EMS (Emergency Management System), get a lot of practical ideas and master her English.
