Prerequisites

Essential knowledge (previously acquired on earlier courses) of the national and international legal system, rules of administrative proceedings, fundamentals of architecture, construction, building industry and civil engineering, material science, engineering of water supply, computer aided design.

Learning Outcomes

Introduction and acquaintance with functional requirement for building fire safety, principles and methods of providing passive and active fire protection in buildings. Acquiring the skills of performing a fire safety assessment and selection of adequate protection methods. Learning good practice in preparing technical documentation for fire protection.

Content:

  • Building fire safety – basic terms and definitions
  • Building regulations and fire regulations, standards.
  • Structure of regulations. Enforcement of fire regulations in buildings. Departures from regulations.
  • Classification of buildings in terms of fire safety. Classification of building elements in terms of fire resistance. Classification of building elements in terms of fire propagation. Reaction to fire of fire materials. Fire resistance of building elements, critical states, criteria, heating curves.
  • Means of warning and escape. Fire alarm and fire detection systems. Means of escape from flats. Design for horizontal escape. Design for vertical escape.
  • Internal fire spread (linings). Classification of linings. Variations and special provisions. Thermoplastic materials.
  • Internal fire spread (structure). Loadbearing elements of structures, compartmentation, concealed spaces, protection of openings and fire-stopping. Special provisions for car parks and shopping centres
  • External fire spread. Construction of external walls, space separation, roof coverings.
  • Access and facilities for fire brigade. Fire mains and hydrants, vehicle access, access to buildings for fire-fighting purposes.
  • Compliance analysis of building designs with fire regulations (design exercise)
  • Fire safety management in buildings
  • Characteristics of fire load distribution.
  • Fire protection of typical structures: reinforced concrete, steel, wood
  • Fundamentals of natural and mechanical smoke exhaust in buildings
  • Introduction to fire engineering. Concept of performance based fire protection. Design fire scenarios. Fire modelling. Egress modelling
