Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of chemistry, thermodynamics, mathematics

Learning Outcomes
Acquaintance with factors influencing possibility of flammable atmosphere creation and contact of this atmosphere with ignition sources, in industrial premises, as well as factors influencing fire and explosion propagation. Building up skills of fire and explosion hazard assessment as well as means of this hazard reduction.

Content (lecture):

  • Fire and explosion phaenomena. The conception of fire and explosion hazard. Effects of fire and explosion on human and constructions. Characteristics of fire properties of raw materials and products as indices of fire and explosion hazard.
  • Fire and explosion hazards in technological apparatuses with flammable gases, vapours and dusts.
  • Emission of flammable substances from apparatuses in normal and emergency operations conditions. Basic kinds and causes of failures of apparatuses and pipelines.
  • Ignition sources in technological processes.
  • Fire load density as fire hazard index.
  • Explosion hazard assessment on the basis of expected pressure rise caused by the explosion. Explosion hazard zones assigning.
  • Factors preventing fire and explosion as well as its propagation in industrial premises.
  • Requirements for buildings and installations regarding fire and explosion hazards.
  • Regulations, standards and procedures in Poland and EU in the field of fire and explosion hazard assessment as well as its effects minimizing.

Content (project work):

  • Elaboration of directions for complex fire protection of chosen industrial premise.

Content (Laboratories):

  • Measurements of explosive gases or vapours concentrations in real conditions.
  • Selfheating of vegetable oil.
  • Measurements of explosible dust concentration.
  • Determination of explosion hazard zone range around of pool of evaporating solvent (part 1).
  • Determination of explosion hazard zone range around of pool of evaporating solvent (part 2).
